The first adaption of John Campbell's 1938 short story, "Who Goes There?", the 1951 movie goes deep in for American exceptionalism and patriotic trappings. The originally claustrophobic story is expended to include a daring sky captain, his fast talking love interest, and a mad professor who demonstrates that intellectuals cannot be trusted and it is the "everyday American man," who can be trusted to save the day. Other than being blatant propaganda, the settings and visuals are in effective jump start into classic black and white thrillers. It is full of creepy moments, suspense, and foreboding. And of course, a happy and heroic ending.
