2001 (2016)

24 Sep, 2016

Yes, again! It was a glorious large print. I do admit though, the more I see this movie, the more critical I am of the third act. The first time you see it, it is such a complete assault on your senses that is makes the other worldly transition. But after seeing it several times, it looses its ability to "shock." At the time, showing all the scenery of alien worlds probably wasn't feasible, but the acid trip ala movie does become ineffective if not tedious on repeated viewings. I still get emotionally at poor HAL.

Kiki's Delivery Service (2016)

I know, I know ... how many times do you need to see it on the big screen? As many times as they will show it! This was a nice original print show at the Prince Charles Cinema, a new favorite place for movies. It is going to be a weekend of features.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

I really didn't have any expectations for this movie, certainly not high ones. Most things that get billed as comedies from this region turn out to have a depressing bend to them, think Muriel's Wedding and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. This kiwi comedy turned out to be a charming, laugh out loud, feel good pleaser. We saw it at the Screen on the Green in Islington with a native kiwi who tried to explain all the kiwi jokes that just flew past us – even without an advanced degree in New Zealand studies, it was more then funny enough for me. Go see it. Take someone to see it.

Star Trek Beyond

I have not enjoyed the reboot, but loyalty to the franchise brought me back for more punishment. I was very pleased by Simon Pegg's script. There was a focus on the crew, problem solving, and working as part of a something greater than Mission Impossible in space.

X-Men Apocalypse

The end certainly is coming, about one movie too late. This painful end to a trilogy was a long slog or boredom. I was excited to see another Xmen with Sam, keeping up with tradition. And like this movie also kept with Xmen tradition, in making a terrible third installment.

Doctor Faustus

This was a special request from Sam. It was, uh, artistic. You might not know what exactly is going on, but you will not be bored.

I didn't get a chance to see this in the movie theater, so I had wait for iTunes. Not an amazing movie, but certainly very entertaining.

Roman Holiday

A treat to return to LA and chance to see a classic movie at the Aero. The movie is a charming time piece, a story that would be too simple and preposterous believe as a movie today. Peck and Hepburn set against Rome leave you in a haze of exotic 50 Europa.

The Book of Mormon

So glad I finally got to see this. It was so smart, so funny, and so honest.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

23 Jan, 2016

This is the type of spectacle one expects in the west end. Fun, bright, and easy for everyone to enjoy.
