This indie documentary does well with a low budget and a compelling use of visuals to tell a story of fascination and cruelty. Rosaleen Norton was a kiwi moved to Sydney. An artist and a bohemian, she was fascinated by all the things that polite society pushed into the dark. She was a terrifying creature; an intelligent, creative, compassionate, and sexually confident women who defined herself. She made friends with outcasts and invented her own religion. Her art would go unrecognized for decades, except that the government of Australia ordered some of her paintings to be burned, deeming them too erotic. Constantly called wicked and hounded by tabloids and the authorities, she embraced the identity and became The Witch of Kings Cross. At long last, her legacy gets some of the attention she is due.
